PHON THONG (ROI ET), THAILAND, August 14, 2011
US Woman Gives Back to Her Homeland
Kayson Nahmoonluk Simpson, President
and Founder of Kayson’s Safe Haven, was born in Phon Thong (Roi
Et), Thailand in 1949. Moving to the United States with her American husband
when she was in her early twenties, she never forgot her homeland, returning
once or twice per year. In September of 2010, she completed building a home base in
the heart of Roi Et to expand her ability to give back to her community through
the organization that she has founded.
Kayson was the youngest of eight children with her father dying when she was only three. Her mother was left to provide for the family.
To help her
aging mother to provide food and household expenses, Kayson worked in the rice
fields as well as selling produce and food in the market place. With little to
show for their hard work, Kayson learned first-hand the hardships of low-income
families. Quoting Kayson, “Since I was a small child, I have always wanted to
share whatever I had with others even when I had virtually nothing. I felt it
my purpose in life."
Carrying that purpose into her adult
life, Kayson has returned annually to distribute clothing for the poor, giving
money and equipment to the local school system, assisting young students with
their education, and helping budding entrepreneurships. With only her personal
finances, she has alone helped scores of needy men, women and children for
nearly 36 years. Now she wants to do more.
With the
official groundbreaking and construction of a permanent home for Kayson’s Safe
Haven on the land once owned by her deceased mother, she is reaching out to
help more and more people. A dedicated website was recently launched to spotlight her work,
accepting donations and the volunteer help from others, she is hoping to
amplify her reach to more needy families and individuals, Kayson is aiming to
not only help those in the immediate community where she grew up, but also help
the needy in neighboring communities as well.
The property provides temporary living quarters for needy individuals and has a meditation center for visitors. The facilities are flanked by a small lake and a mango grove. A modest staff of Thai personnel maintains the property and prepares meals for poor families in the area.
